About the Artist

Ni Zhu Ni Zhu grew up in a small town in southern China. She studied law in Beijing University and came to North America for graduate studies. While still on a career path to become a law professor, Ni encountered the passion of her life, painting. A career change had to happen as she devoted more and more time and energy in art. She started taking classes at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco as well as workshops with master painters such as Huihan Liu, Zhaoming Wu, Quang Ho and Daniel Gerhartz. She earned her MFA degree in 2020.

Ni always finds herself intrigued by a certain light, a certain mood, or simply a certain moment in life. Naturally she paints people doing their thing in their own world, trying to recreate the mood or feeling that once moved her. Having grown up in China, lived in North America for 20 years and travelled extensively across the globe, Ni is constantly touched and inspired by interesting moments of life in various contexts and situations.

Ni holds signature membership in the Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionist Society. She is also a member of the California Art Club and the Women Artists of the West. Recent recognitions include First Place in the Landscape category of the 37th Artist’s Magazine Annual Art Competition in 2020, the In Pursuit of Beauty Special Award at Women Artists of the West 50th National Exhibition in 2020, the Outstanding Composition and Technique Award of Excellence at the 2017 OPA annual National Exhibition, and the director’s choice award at the 2016 Spring Show of the Academy of Art University.
